Kenyan runners dominate Hospice
BY STAFF WRITER MATT WEINSTEIN

Scott Bagley knew coming into the Run for Hospice 5K that it was going to be a close race among American runners. He also knew that the chase would be for fourth place.

The Kenyans again dominated the Hospice in Greece, with the three men entered placing first, second and third overall, and the lone female runner placing first.

Moses Macharia took first place with a course-record 14 minutes, 8 seconds, beating the old mark by four seconds, set last year by countryman Joseph Ndiritu. Paul Mwanga (14:17) and David Kipngetich (14:40) finished second and third.

³Felt very good,² said Macharia, who will get to take home $500 for the win. ³I liked my pace in the first mile (4:24) but slowed down a little.²

A pack of about seven Americans led by Bagley, Mark Andrews, Chad Bader and David Dominguez followed the Kenyans. Bagley edged Dominguez by five seconds for fourth place.

³I really enjoyed myself out there today,² Bagley said. ³I never expected to be the first American finisher. There was a big group of us fighting and passing each other through the whole race.²

Andrews, still recovering from the Wineglass Marathon last weekend in Corning, started the race working for position with the Kenyan runners through the first mile. Andrews started trailing off during the second mile, and finished 11th.

Bader, who finished sixth but did not receive prize money due to his college eligibility, was also happy with his race.

³My legs have been stiff all week so I didn¹t want to overd0 it, but I was happy with my time,² the Canisius College senior said.

Kenya¹s Jackline Torori won the women¹s race for the second straight year, smashing her course record from last year (16:05 this year to 16:24 last year).

³The course was very flat which was very good,² Torori said. ³The weather was good and helped make my time better.²

The top American finisher for the women was Lori Hewig of Schenectady. Hewig finished in 17:11, which set a masters record. Diane Legare, ranked No. 1 in the world for female runners over 50, finished in 17:54, just a few seconds slower than last year¹s 17:48.

Last year¹s second-place finisher, Kristin White, using the race for speed training for the New York City Marathon, finished sixth and took home $100.

Gretchen Welch used the race to stretch her lead in the 2001 Runner of the Year standings to three points over Renee Rombaut. They came into the race with Welch leading by one point, 89-88. Welch finished ninth, earning seven points and Rombaut finished 11th, worth five points in the standings.
